Are you ready to rock and roll with rocks and minerals. By answering the short questions on this treasure hunt you will learn about many types of rocks and minerals, how they are formed and what they are used for in our world today. You will also have fun reading some funny jokes. After you finish all the questions there is a quiz for extra credit. Have fun researching your own personal rock (birthstone). Answers:

1.     Sedimentary rock is rock that is formed out of various materials that is put down in layers and over time has turned into rock.

 

2.     Igneous rock is rock that is formed when molten or partially                 molten material, called magma, cools and solidifies.

 

3.     Metamorphic rock is a type of rock formed when rocky material experiences intense heat and pressure in the crust of the earth.

 

4.     This scale measures the “scratch hardness” of easily available minerals and arranges them in order of their hardness.  The hardest mineral is the diamond and the softest is talc.

 

5.     Answers will vary.

 

6.     Thirty- five minerals are needed to make a television set.

 

7.     Quartz in the most common rock.  Rubies are the most popular gemstone.

9.     You must include three of the following rocks:  sandstone, limestone, shale, conglomerate or gypsum.
